The world’s most expensive player, Neymar Jr was heavily criticised for his recent post on social media. An injured Neymar posted a picture of him playing online poker while watching the rest of his Paris St Germain (PSG) teammates thrashed Monaco, in the background.
This isn’t the first time that the Brazilian athlete has come under fire for a social media post. His injury to his toe resulted in him requiring the use of a cast. While seated in a wheelchair and his leg in a cast, Neymar attempted to pay homage to Stephen Hawking. He tweeted in his native language to almost 39 million followers: “You have to have a positive attitude and get the best out of the situation are in. #Stephen Hawking.”
While he was twice noted as the most marketable athlete in the world; it would seem that Neymar’s toe injury is now causing damage to his reputation!
Angry Reaction to Neymar and Poker
The pro footballers post angered fans and players alike. One person in particular that openly criticised him was former PSG player, Christophe Dugarry. Dugarry likened Neymar’s actions to ‘spitting’ on his team; calling him out for not being a leader. In addition, Dugarry said: “on top of that, he was playing poker! How can the club accept that?” He added, “I would be mad with anger.”
PokerStars isn’t his only sponsor; in fact, he has sponsors that range from Nike to Volkswagen to Unilever. So, why then has his received such criticism? Well, in his months of recovery Neymar has done more promotional work for the online poker site compared to the rest of his sponsors. In fact, his social media timeline contains numerous pictures of him playing on PokerStars.
While PSG won the match without their prized player, the football world felt that Neymar should have been there to lift the trophy with his team. Consequently, his lack of presence has sparked plenty rumours of him changing clubs. With some fans saying he has expired his team at PSG and has grown tired of France.
Neymar returns to football in the upcoming 2018 World Cup and is excited about his comeback.
