Molly’s Game is the latest film by Aaron Sorkin. It tells the real-life story of Molly Bloom, dubbed the ‘poker princess’ of Hollywood. Sorkin is an Oscar-winning writer, best known for his work on A Few Good Men, Steve Jobs and for writing The Social Network. In this movie, Sorkin makes his directorial debut. The movie stars Oscar-nominated curvy beauty Jessica Chastain of Mad Men fame and British hunk Idris Elba as the lead protagonists.
Sorkin was inspired by Bloom’s story and said, “I saw her as a unique movie heroine, and thought there was an interesting way to tell her story”. Molly Bloom ran one the world’s most exclusive and high-stakes poker clubs. Her poker club included celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire at the height of his Spider-Man career. However, the high rolling poker club soon moved to New York and went on to include the Russian mob. Finally, this placed Bloom on the FBI’s radar and ultimately led to her indictment.
Molly’s Game Premiere
The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. However, Bloom could not freely enter Canada due to her convicted felon status. Thus, required Sorkin to get her an exemption. Bloom was awarded a 48-hours pass from Canadian authorities.
Before the premiere in the Eglin Theatre in Toronto, Bloom was offered a private screening but turned it down.
Critical Reception of Molly’s Game
The film has received multiple compliments already. For example, movie critics have praised Chastain’s performance. Compliments include Chastain ‘rules the world of underground poker’ in this performance and she ‘takes one of the best female roles of the year’.
But the biggest compliment goes to Sorkin, “Molly’s Game is the best of him, with many of his problematic tendencies removed, resulting in a tremendously entertaining film that turns the prolific writer into a filmmaking double-threat in one fell swoop.”
The movie also stars Hollywood royalty Kevin Costner and Michael Cera. Molly’s Game is set for theatre release from November 22; we can hardly wait!
